About Merlin

Age: 18
Physical Appearance: Tall, thin, somewhat gangly. He has fair skin, black hair kept in a short bowlish cut, and bright blue eyes (though they turn gold when he does magic.) He has large ears and an equally large smile, which he is often showing.
Education: Not much of one at all. As a peasant living in Medieval Britain, schooling wasn’t available to him. He was, however, able to teach himself to read. When he went off to live with Gaius, he learned some basics of healing, and educated himself in the ways of magic.
Occupation: Apprentice to the court physician Gaius, and manservant to Prince Arthur Pendragon
Significant Other: …What? *Merlin blinks at you* Oh! Oh, no, not me. *He chuckles nervously*
Sexual Preference: Erm… *blinks again perplexedly; rubs neck; grins sheepishly and shrugs*

History

Melin grew up in a small village called Ealdor, outside of Camelot. From the time he was a very small child, Merlin exhibited signs of extremely powerful magical abilities. Without the use of spells or charms, he was able to perform advanced magic, usually without effort or intent. Knowing her son had to learn to control his powers and find a proper use for them, Merlin’s mother sent him away to the kingdom of Camelot, where he would work and live with Gaius, the court physician.

When Merlin arrives in Camelot, however, he discovers that King Uther Pendragon has banned magic from the kingdom, and the punishment for anyone caught practicing it is execution. Due to several accidental uses of magic, Gaius discovers Merlin’s ability and makes him swear to keep it secret. However, he supports Merlin’s need to properly learn and control it, and he even gives him a book of magic to study secretly.

Only a short while after his arrival in Camelot, Merlin catches a group of boys bullying a servant. He stands up to their leader to stop them, only to find out that this young man is not merely a town ruffian, but actually Prince Arthur Pendragon, King Uther’s son. Merlin and Arthur butt heads several times following this encounter, as Arthur thinks Merlin is an insolent commoner, and Merlin thinks Arthur is an arrogant prat. Unfortunately (and eventually fortunately) for both of them, they were not soon to leave each other’s lives any time soon. After Merlin (secretly using his magic) manages to rescue Arthur from an assassination attempt, King Uther assigns Merlin to be Arthur’s personal manservant.

It’s an unfavorable situation for both of them at first, but they soon grow to become rather attached to each other. Which is lucky for them, as Merlin learns from a dragon living in the castle basement that it is his destiny and purpose to stay by Arthur’s side and protect him by any means possible, ensuring that Camelot will one day have its greatest king.

How Others Perceive Your Character: Due to his awkward and clumsy nature, others sometimes tend to see Merlin as bit slow on the uptake- or, as Arthur prefers to tell him frequently- an idiot, moron, and ridiculous. On a more positive note, those who befriend Merlin know he is impossibly kind, caring, loyal, and willing to “do anything for anyone,” as another character once said of him.

Beliefs, Convictions, Morals: While Merlin doesn’t see the world as entirely black and white, he does know good from evil and right from wrong, and he’ll do whatever it takes to ensure that good always wins. Friends and family mean everything to him, and above all, he must and will protect Arthur at all costs. It’s more than a destiny now; Arthur is more important to him than anyone in the world, and he knows he cannot lose him.

Reason(s) for Escaping to Canada: The evil sorceress Nimueh lured Merlin into a cave, and then trapped him there. Eventually, he was able to find a thin enough section of rock to magic his way out, but when he emerged, he was in a strange town in a place called Canada, full of strange technology, strange clothing, strange accents, and even stranger people.
